Purple Prison: the prison server with 3 million joins, explained

Since August 2014 it has been the prison server: rank up from A, mine your way to freedom, and fight over crates that fall from the sky at warp pvp.

2 min read Live numbers from our pinger

Every prison server has the same bones: you start locked up at rank A, you mine, you sell, you rank up, and somewhere around Z you're free and rich. Purple Prison has been running that loop since August 2014 and has done it better than anyone, which is why its own numbers say "over 3 million unique joins" and why, at any hour we check, it has more players online than most entire networks.

The loop, done properly

The About page describes the format without dressing it up: you start at the lowest rank and move up "by completing tasks or earning currency," unlocking new prison areas, items and privileges as you go. Money comes from mining, from tasks, and from trading with other players, and it goes into the shop or into the auction. Around the core are the things that keep people logged in for years: parkour, PvP arenas, and the events the MOTD advertises with a straight face, like "crates from the sky @ warp pvp."

Ranks A to Z, then prestige

The classic ladder, then a prestige system that resets your rank for permanent bonuses. The grind is the game, so the grind is tuned.

Warp PvP

The one place you can fight. Crates drop, gangs contest them, and the leaderboards are where reputations get made.

Every version since 1.7

The server accepts clients from 1.7 through 1.21, so a friend on an old PvP-era version can join the same world.

3,000,000+unique joins since August 2014

Why it wins the category

Prison is a solved format, so what separates the servers is care. Purple Prison has kept one server rather than becoming a network, has kept its rank progression free of paywalls that skip the game, and has stayed on top of the vote lists for a decade, with "Voted Best OP Prison" in its listing titles year after year. It is Java Edition only, which its site states plainly, and it runs on every client version the anti-cheat can handle.

First hour

Join purpleprison.net, do the starter quests, and mine the A mine until you can afford B. Sell in bulk, not per stack. Don't go to warp pvp until you have gear you can lose. Join a gang once you're a few ranks in; that's where the money and the fights are.

For a prison server with a science-fiction twist, read our story on Cosmic Prisons. Our prison servers guide explains the format, and the prison servers list has the rest.
