Minecraft prison servers

On a prison server you start as an inmate in the lowest mine, sell what you dig for money, and buy your way up a ladder of ranks (usually A to Z) to better mines, then prestige and do it again.

For playersUpdated 5 min read

Quick answer
  • The loop: mine blocks, sell them, pay to rank up, unlock a richer mine. Repeat.
  • Ranks usually run A to Z, then prestige resets you to A with a permanent bonus.
  • OP prisons move fast with huge enchants; non-OP prisons are slower and grindier.
  • Check the store before you invest: selling pickaxe power or money for cash is pay-to-win.

Minecraft prison servers are a grinding game mode where you "serve your sentence" by mining. You spawn in the lowest-ranked mine, sell the blocks you dig for in-game money, and spend that money to rank up, which unlocks a better mine with more valuable blocks. Climb the whole ladder, usually rank A to rank Z, and you can prestige: reset to the bottom with a permanent bonus and climb again.

It's one of the oldest server game modes, and it's still popular because the loop is simple, satisfying and easy to play in short sessions. Here's how prison works, what to do in your first hour, and how to tell a good prison server from a cash grab.

The prison loop in one picture

1. Mine

Dig out your rank's mine. It refills on a timer or when most of it is empty.

2. Sell

Turn blocks into money with /sell all, a sell sign, or an auto-sell enchant.

3. Rank up

Pay the cost with /rankup. Each rank costs more than the last.

4. Upgrade

Spend on pickaxe enchants so you mine faster and earn more per block.

5. Prestige

At the top rank, reset to A for a permanent multiplier or perk.

6. Repeat

Each lap is faster. The leaderboard tracks who's furthest ahead.

Commands differ between servers, but /rankup, /mines (or /warp), /sell all and /prestige are the common ones. Type /help on your first login to see the server's own list.

How prison ranks work: A to Z and beyond

Most prisons use letter ranks. Each rank has its own mine, and each mine has more valuable blocks than the last. A typical ladder looks something like this, though every server designs its own:

StageRanksWhat the mine usually holdsYour focus
EarlyA to FStone, cobblestone, coal, a little ironRank up fast; don't overspend on enchants
MiddleG to PIron, gold, lapis, redstoneEfficiency and Fortune on your pickaxe
LateQ to YDiamond, emerald, their block formsMoney multipliers, custom enchants
TopZ, then "Free"The best blocks on the serverDeciding when to prestige
PrestigeP1, P2 and upBack to mine A, with a bonusStacking multipliers for faster laps

Many servers add a "Free" rank after Z, when your character is released from prison and gets access to extra areas like a plot world or a PvP zone. Some servers go further with rebirths or "ascensions," which are prestige for your prestiges.

What to do in your first hour

  1. Find mine A. Use /mines or /warp a. Check if the server gives a starter pickaxe or kit with /kit.
  2. Mine, don't wander. Money in the early game comes from blocks broken per minute. Stay in the mine and dig in straight lines.
  3. Sell often. A full inventory earns nothing. Use /sell all whenever you're full, or look for a sell sign near the mine.
  4. Rank up the moment you can afford it. Early ranks are cheap and their mines pay more, so every rank-up raises your income.
  5. Get your first pickaxe upgrade. Usually Efficiency first (mine faster), then Fortune (more drops). On servers with tokens, spend them on the pickaxe, not on crates.
  6. Vote. Most prisons give keys or money for voting. It's free progress every day. We explain how our votes and rankings work on how we rank.

Pickaxes, enchants and tokens

Your pickaxe is your whole character in prison. Servers push vanilla enchants far past their normal levels and add custom ones. Common types you'll see:

  • Efficiency and Fortune at levels far above vanilla's caps.
  • Area enchants that break a layer or a sphere of blocks at once (often called things like Explosive, Jackhammer or Laser).
  • Money and token finders that give bonus currency as you mine.
  • Auto-sell, which sells blocks as you break them so your inventory never fills.

Many prisons have a second currency, often called tokens, earned from mining and spent on enchants. The names differ, the idea is always the same: a stronger pickaxe earns faster, which buys a stronger pickaxe.

OP vs non-OP prison servers

This is the biggest choice after edition. "OP" here means overpowered progression, not operator status.

OP prisonNon-OP prison
PaceRanks fly by; prestige within hoursDays or weeks per full climb
EnchantsHuge levels, whole-mine explosionsCloser to vanilla, small upgrades matter
NumbersBillions, then trillions of moneyPrices you can reason about
Feels likeAn idle game with a pickaxeClassic grind with an economy
Best forShort sessions and big dopamineLong-term players who like trading

Neither is better. If you're coming from Skyblock or like number-go-up games, OP prison is fun. If you want your progress to feel earned, pick non-OP. Many also have gangs, cells and PvP areas, which overlap with Factions.

Is it pay-to-win? How to check before you grind

Prison is the mode most tempted by pay-to-win, because progress is just money and money is easy to sell. Mojang's usage guidelines say servers may sell cosmetics and charge an equal access fee, but can't sell perks that give a competitive advantage, and in-game currency must have no real-world value. We can't vouch for any server's store, so here's what to look at yourself:

  • Store items that sell in-game money, tokens or rank-ups for real cash.
  • Paid pickaxes, enchant books or sell multipliers.
  • Crates you can only open with purchased keys that drop gameplay items.
  • A store that sells only cosmetics: chat tags, particle trails, pets, titles.
  • Vote keys that give the same kind of rewards anyone can earn.
  • Clear rules and visible staff in the server's Discord.

Live prison servers: Java, Bedrock and Xbox

We measure every listed server's players ourselves, every few minutes, and flag counts that look inflated. At the moment we see 95 prison servers online.

Java: copy the prison server IP from its listing and use Multiplayer > Add Server. The current Java release is 26.3; see 26.3 servers, or 26.2 if you're a version behind. Bedrock: on Windows, iOS and Android, Servers > Add Server with port 19132. Prison servers that also accept Bedrock through GeyserMC show a separate Bedrock address on their page.

Xbox (and PlayStation, Switch): the normal console game can't add servers by address, so a "best prison server for Xbox" is really "a featured server with a prison mode, or a custom server through a community workaround." Our Xbox guide explains the options and how to undo them.

Quick questions

What's the fastest way to rank up in prison?

Rank up as soon as you can afford it, sell constantly, vote daily, and put early money into Efficiency and Fortune on your pickaxe rather than crates.

What does prestige do?

It resets your rank to A, usually keeps your pickaxe, and gives a permanent bonus such as a money multiplier. Each lap goes faster.

Should I join a prison server at the start of a season?

If there's a leaderboard, yes. Prison servers often reset for new seasons, and starting on day one puts you on equal footing. Check fresh-season servers.

Do I need mods to play prison?

No. Prison runs on server plugins, so a normal, unmodded client works.
