About Java Edition servers
Java Edition is the original PC version of Minecraft for Windows, Mac and Linux. It has the largest server scene: almost every big network, modded server and SMP runs on Java.
To join, open Multiplayer, click Add Server and paste the address. If a server reports a version different from yours, most accept a range of versions; its page here shows what it reports.

Can Java players join Bedrock servers?
Not directly. Look for servers tagged Crossplay, which accept both editions.
