Good SMPs have a community you can see: an active Discord, regular events, and rules that are actually enforced. Most public SMPs add a few plugins such as land claims so nobody can grief your build, but the core game stays close to vanilla.
Some SMPs are whitelisted, which means you apply first. They tend to be smaller and friendlier; public ones let you join straight away.
