Dungeon Realms: declared dead in 2015, still online in 2026

It opened its closed beta in January 2013, was called dead by its own admin in May 2015, and was bought and brought back that September. It has been running, quietly, ever since.

"The #1 Minecraft MMORPG," says the MOTD, which was true once and is now a kind of stubbornness. Dungeon Realms opened its website on September 8, 2012, its closed beta on January 26, 2013, and its open beta that June, and for a couple of years it was the biggest RPG in Minecraft. Then it died, in the words of its own admin, in May 2015. Then someone bought it. It has been online, on Minecraft 1.12.2, more or less ever since, and eight people were playing it when our pinger last looked.

What it was

Dungeon Realms was an MMORPG before Wynncraft made the format famous: a persistent world with weapon and armor tiers from T1 to T5, tier-gating so you couldn't skip ahead, dungeons like the Conjurer's Chapel, and a PvP economy of gear you could lose. The closed beta cost ten dollars or a contest win, which tells you how much demand there was. Its founder, Availer, stepped down on January 21, 2014 and passed the server to the Minecade Network.

  1. The website opens. Social accounts and a YouTube channel follow within days.

  2. Closed beta, paid or won. Open beta on June 15 wipes all characters.

  3. Availer steps down; Minecade takes over. The game goes offline around June 2014.

  4. An admin confirms Minecade has stopped development and that Dungeon Realms is "dead."

  5. DestinyMC acquires all rights, relaunches the forums and brings the servers up on 1.8.

  6. A leveling update adds classes (Rogue, Paladin, Warrior, Reaver); warzones and a guild update follow. Wipes draw "an average of 400 players."

  7. Still online at play.dungeonrealms.net on 1.12.2, run by a small team the wiki names as Kneesnap, Disregard and AsianBajan.

What's there now

The game you'd join today is the 2019-2020 version: pick a class, level through tiers, run dungeons, join a guild, fight in neutral warzones. It is small and it knows it; the wiki's last big update was August 2025. But it's a complete, hand-built MMORPG from the first wave of them, still playable, which is more than can be said for most of its contemporaries. If you were there in 2013, it's a time machine. If you weren't, it's the prototype of a genre.

Quick answers

play.dungeonrealms.net, on Minecraft Java 1.12.2.

Is Dungeon Realms still active?

It's online with a small player base. Wipes and updates have drawn hundreds; quiet days draw a handful.

Is Dungeon Realms free?

Yes. The paid closed beta was in 2013; today it's free to play.

It's older, smaller and gear-driven with T1-T5 tiers and PvP zones; Wynncraft is a quest-driven MMORPG with far more players.
