VindexCraft 2.0: a 14-year-old city gets rebuilt

Somewhere on a Minecraft map that has been running since 2013 there's a White House, a Congress that keeps a record of its laws, a college that hands out law degrees, and traffic laws for the cars. VindexCraft calls itself Minecraft's oldest CityRP server. Its team is now building the thing that comes after it: VindexCraft 2.0.

This is a story about a comeback that's still being built. Most of it can be checked, because VindexCraft keeps better records than most real towns.

What 2.0 is, so far

VindexCraft splits its world in two now. Vindex 1.0 is the server you can join today, the city players have lived in for more than a decade. Vindex 2.0 is what the server's own archive calls "the not yet released successor": a new VindexCraft built from scratch by a separate team.

The most telling detail is how the 2.0 art is being paid for. In January 2025 the team ran Pledge-A-Model: players pledge toward new 3D models, and each pledge added hats to "our resource pack's hat collection for launch". For a short window it was two hats per pledge. Players are paying for the wardrobe of a city they can't enter yet.

Why a rebuild matters for this server

To see why a 2.0 is a big deal, look at what 1.0 turned into. The founder, dragon_12dk, opened the server to the public on September 9, 2012, after running it privately among friends in 2011.

It didn't start as a city. According to the server's own archive, it opened as Panem Craft: twelve districts, each with mayors and local officials, loosely modeled on The Hunger Games. In 2013 the theme was dropped. After a short stint as "WorldZ" it moved to a new map, the one that's still in use, and took the name VindexCraft.

Then the systems arrived. Custom plugins started in 2015. Vehicles came in 2016. The server's own listings describe a place where you "start out in Vindex City" and "earn several jobs, buy homes and apartments, buy cars, planes, helicopters, boats and more", built on "many many CUSTOM plugins" meant to make "this blocky world more and more like real life."

1. 2011

   A private city-building server among friends.

2. Sep 2012

   Opens to the public as Panem Craft, with twelve districts run by mayors.

3. 2013

   Briefly WorldZ, then VindexCraft, on the map still used today.

4. 2015

   Custom development begins. A World War One game mode launches (remade in 2019).

5. 2016

   Vehicles arrive. Online players regularly pass 50.

6. 2017 to 2018

   The server's prime: regularly 80 or more players online, per its archive. The archive's Vindex Award records start in 2017.

7. 2019

   The Empire of Lech is founded on February 27. VindexCraft Zombies, inspired by Shaun of the Dead, debuts as a Halloween event.

8. 2019 to 2020

   Lockdowns bring a surge of players. Elections and lawmaking move to a website called Respublica.

9. 2020 to 2024

   A long decline, with uneven activity.

10. 2024 to 2026

    A new website after Enjin shut down, a revived government, proximity voice chat, and the 2.0 project.

A country run by its players

What makes VindexCraft unlike most roleplay servers is how seriously its players govern. The archive describes Vindex Nation as a federal republic with a president, a vice president and a unicameral Congress. It has its own currency, the Vindex dollar, and neighbors with their own histories: the Empire of Lech and the Kingdom of Wilden.

Laws are real records. When Respublica shut down on August 23, 2023, dragon_12dk moved elections into the community's Discord and ordered that every law passed by Congress be entered into the archive, adding that "the executive branch may not enforce laws that have not been submitted to NARA." In late 2024 the revived Congress passed, among others, a Class-2 Weapon Regulation Act, a Basic Traffic Law, and a Revised Police Evading Act.

The politics have stakes. On March 5, 2026, BarryBurns and HiDefinition faced off in a voice debate hosted by the in-game news outlet CFN, at the CFN Center in Seawall. Burns won a second term and was sworn in at a brand-new Capitol building two days later.

All of this is remembered on purpose. VindexCraft has its own National Archives & Records Administration. Chief Archivist xishai listed its holdings in 2024: over 9,000 unique in-game books, more than 120 archived Discord servers, the old Enjin forums, over 85 recorded executive orders, every constitution, and every Vindex Award since 2017. Most Minecraft servers lose their history when a host shuts down. This one runs a government agency to keep it.

1.0 isn't standing still

While 2.0 is being built, the original city keeps getting new things:

• Proximity voice chat (August 2025), which works on all clients: type /vv start link and follow the link.
• VindexCraft Zombies came back in April 2025, the 2019 Halloween mode with its Shaun of the Dead spirit.
• A property raffle in August 2024 handed more than 100 properties from inactive players back to active ones, to shake up the housing market.
• A full tanks and warfare overhaul was announced in April 2026 as "undergoing development", with custom models credited to Mauzer0.
