"Thrown into a world full of undead, you must scavenge for weapons and supplies to help you survive. Avoid or kill walkers, the choice is yours, but remember: just one bite could be fatal." That's Havoc Games describing The Mining Dead, its Walking Dead server, and the pitch hasn't needed updating since the mode was created in 2013. The map is the show's Georgia. The kits are the show's characters. The walkers do what walkers do.
The map is the point
The Mining Dead's world is a hand-built 5,000 by 5,000 block map of the places from AMC's series: Woodbury, the Prison, Alexandria and the rest, with roads between them lined with abandoned cars and the occasional herd. Players spawn, pick from "over 30 unique kits inspired by characters from the show," and set out with guns and melee weapons to loot, fortify and survive. Safe zones exist for trading and catching your breath.
Two modes on the same map: walkers only, or walkers plus everyone else. The server's own line: "depending on what kind of challenge you are up for."

Formerly HavocMC, the network has been "pushing the limits of vanilla Minecraft since 2012" and is also home to Craft Theft Auto and Mine Wars, which is why its MOTD lists "The Mining Dead | Craft Theft Auto" together. The Walking Dead mode is the one it's known for, the one the "most authentic Walking Dead server" forum thread was about, and the one that has kept a crowd for thirteen years while the show it was based on finished its run.

Surviving your first night
Pick a kit with a melee weapon, not a gun; ammo is scarce early and noise draws walkers. Loot the small buildings first. Find a safe zone before dark. And if you're in PvP, the person waving at you from the road is not your friend.
