In 2016 Minecraft changed its combat, added a cooldown to attacks, and split the PvP community in two. Most servers stayed on 1.8 forever. PvP Legacy, founded by AoElite on October 11, 2015 as "Vanilla Legacy," went the other way: it built a server around the new combat, first with command blocks and 1.9 snapshots, then with its own plugins from August 2018, when it took its current name. Today it is the duels server for modern Minecraft, with hundreds online and "50K+ members" on Discord.
From kit builder to duels
The early server was FFA KitPvP with a kit builder and a point system, so you designed your own loadout within a budget. The "Versus" update in February 2020 added duels, and they took over so quickly that KitPvP was removed. What's left is the modern shape: 1v1 and team duels with "customizable kits and maps," modifiers, an OP FFA for the gear-heavy crowd, and Crystal FFA for the end-crystal specialists who make the highlight reels.

Why it matters
Modern combat is where new players start, and for years the servers to practice it on were few. PvP Legacy built the tools, the kit editor above all, that let a player actually train shields, axes, crystals and maces instead of just fighting. It stayed a single community rather than a network, run by the same founder, with a wiki that records its own updates.
