EarthMC: a whole planet, claimed one chunk at a time

Pick a real coastline, found a town, talk your neighbors into a nation. For ten years, EarthMC has let players redraw the world map.

Most Minecraft worlds are random. EarthMC's is not. Its terrain is Earth itself, rebuilt from satellite height and terrain data, and every town on it was founded by a player who picked a real place on a real map and decided to stay.

The idea: geography you already know

EarthMC launched in 2016. Its pitch has barely changed since. Instead of vanilla terrain, you spawn onto a scaled-down planet, which the official site calls a 500-to-1 recreation of Earth. The Alps are where the Alps should be. The Nile runs where the Nile runs.

That one choice changes everything. On a random seed, a good base spot is just a good base spot. On EarthMC, it's Paris, or Cape Town, or a Pacific island nobody has claimed yet, and players bring real-world ideas about borders and neighbors with them.

Towns, nations and gold

The political engine is Towny, a plugin for claiming and managing land. On EarthMC it works in two layers:

Towns

A mayor claims land, invites residents, sets permissions and can sell plots inside the town, so there's a real estate market inside every settlement.

Nations

Towns can band together into nations that expand, ally and compete with one another across the map.

Money is simple and physical. The currency is the gold ingot, earned through mining, trading and taxes, and the site says the economy is entirely player-run, with more than 500 player-made shops. In a 2025 blog post, admin Fix wrote that gold can't be bought with real money directly; its value is set by what players trade.

PC Gamer summed up the appeal in its roundup of the best Minecraft servers, calling EarthMC the ideal platform for anybody who wants to set themselves up as a mayor.

Three resets in ten years

Earth servers live and die by their maps. A map that fills up leaves no room for newcomers, while a reset wipes years of work. EarthMC has chosen to reset rarely. Its docs list three map resets in total: 2018, 2022 and 2026.

The 2022 reset was unusual because the old world did not disappear. On May 13, 2022, EarthMC opened a second earth world, Terra Aurora, with 1.18 caves and world height, custom ore generation and a nation price of 2,048 gold. The previous world, Terra Nova, stayed playable beside it. At the time, the team said the server had passed one million unique players and 600 years of combined playtime.

The latest reset brought Terra Nostra, a newly generated Earth that EarthMC says is four times as large as the previous map. The docs put it at about 128,000 by 64,000 blocks. Premium players got in first, on April 17, 2026. Two days later, the team wrote that early access had passed 700 concurrent players without a queue, thanks to a new 64-core server. The public launch followed on May 1.

  1. EarthMC opens with an Earth map, Towny land claims and gold as currency.

  2. The first map reset. The same year, two players who met on the server get married, a moment Fix still points to eight years later.

  3. Terra Aurora opens on May 13 after a week of Premium early access. Terra Nova stays online beside it.

  4. The server passes one million unique players and 600 years of combined playtime.

  5. Terra Nostra early access begins for Premium players on a map four times the size of the last one.

  6. Terra Nostra opens to everyone.

  7. EarthMC turns ten. Players who log in that day get a Globe badge.

  8. The Moon Update adds rockets, oxygen and a second world to claim.

Then they went to the Moon

For its tenth birthday, EarthMC added a new frontier. The Moon Update, released on August 30, 2026, adds Terra Luna, a moon world of 35,000 by 17,500 blocks.

Getting there is a project. You craft a rocket and fuel it, and a full tank takes 16 bottles of hydrogen. You also need a cosmonaut helmet, because without oxygen you suffocate. One helmet holds about 25 minutes of air, and each spare bottle adds about two and a half.

Why go?

Gold spawns more often on the Moon than on Earth, and towns can claim lunar outposts through Towny. The catch: PvP is on everywhere up there, even inside claims. The team says the extra gold on Terra Luna also helps protect the main map's longevity.

It fits the pattern. The core loop that Fix described in the anniversary post, gold as currency, Towny for land and an Earth map instead of vanilla terrain, has stayed the same for a decade. What changes is the stage.

The server that keeps its own history

A place like this generates stories faster than anyone can play them, and players write them down. EarthMC's docs say the community wiki has passed 2,500 articles documenting the server's history. Fix says the team is focused on two things next: helping new players find their feet and giving veterans more to do.
