MinecraftOnline: the oldest Minecraft server, and it never reset

On August 4, 2010, Mojang switched on survival multiplayer for the first time. Within hours, a world called Freedonia was open to the public. It is still open. Nobody has ever wiped it, rolled it back or started over, which is why Guinness World Records lists MinecraftOnline as the oldest, still-running, never-reset Minecraft server that exists.

What "never reset" actually means here

Most long-running servers keep the brand and change the map. Freedonia kept the map. The spawn area has been rebuilt and expanded many times, but it sits on the same blocks that were generated in 2010, and the world around it has been growing ever since. The server's own counter says the map is now over 44 km in diameter. By the time Guinness recorded it, the world had already passed 30 km.

Every one of those blocks was placed by hand. MinecraftOnline runs plain survival with no creative mode for players: the site puts it simply, "Everything you see in Freedonia has been built by hand, from legitimately harvested materials." That includes the cathedrals, the subway tunnels that cross the map, the abandoned early bases you can still stumble into, and the pixel art from a decade before you joined.

The rules that kept it alive

A fifteen-year-old public map should have been griefed into gravel. The reason it wasn't is a rule set that has not softened with time. Griefing means a permanent ban, no appeals, and the numbers show how seriously it is enforced: the home page lists 55,403 bans next to 41,730 player homes, with 42 admins and 65 moderators keeping watch. The server calls this "Survival, Without the Grief!" in its MOTD, and that promise is the whole product.

It is also a deliberately old server in other ways. Freedonia runs Minecraft 1.12.2, chosen for stability and to keep the world consistent, so you'll need that version in your launcher. MinecraftOnline was the first survival server to link its in-game chat to IRC, and that channel still exists. There's a wiki with pages for landmarks, a timeline of "eras", and a tradition of exploration videos that runs to hundreds of episodes.

1. Aug 4, 2010

   Survival multiplayer is released. Freedonia opens the same day, within hours of the first SMP build.

2. 2011 to 2013

   The first great builds and the subway network. The map passes the point where a new player can't walk to the edge in a session.

3. 2018

   Guinness World Records lists MinecraftOnline as the oldest still-running, never-reset server, then 8 years old with more than 50,000 unique players.

4. 2020

   Ten years online. The wiki's "Decade Server Awards" mark it.

5. 2026

   Still on 1.12.2, still the same map, 337,000 players in and a few dozen online at any hour.

What it's like to join

You spawn in a city, because that is what fifteen years of building at one spot produces. The first thing most new players do is get lost, which is the point. Take the subway, pick a direction, and keep going until the builds thin out. Somewhere past the ring of old towns is fresh land, and that's where you make your own mark, knowing it will still be there in ten years.

Why it's worth your time

Plenty of servers are bigger. None of them can show you what your builds look like after fifteen years of weather, because their maps didn't survive that long. Freedonia did.
