What is Lifesteal in Minecraft?

Lifesteal is a survival mode where killing a player steals one of their hearts and dying costs you one of yours; run out of hearts and you're out of the game.

For playersUpdated 6 min read

Quick answer
  • Kill a player: you gain a max-health heart. Die to a player: you lose one.
  • At zero hearts most servers ban you until someone revives you; some make you a spectator instead.
  • Hearts can often be crafted, withdrawn as items and traded, so Lifesteal is as much an economy as a PvP mode.

Lifesteal Minecraft is a survival multiplayer mode where your maximum health is the prize. When you kill another player, you steal one of their hearts and your health bar grows; when you die, you lose a heart permanently. Drop to zero hearts and you're eliminated, usually banned until someone brings you back.

That one rule turns ordinary survival into a game where every fight has a cost you can see on screen. This guide covers the core rules, the variations you'll run into on different Lifesteal servers, how to not lose your hearts in the first hour, and where to find a server.

Where Lifesteal came from

The mode blew up with the Lifesteal SMP, a private, invite-only YouTube creator server that started in July 2021. Its heart-stealing plugin made every death dramatic, the videos did well, and public servers copied the idea fast. Today "Lifesteal" is a game mode of its own, and big public servers run it as their main world. You can't join the original (it's whitelisted), but there are plenty of public servers built on the same rules. If you're new to the SMP idea itself, start with what an SMP is.

How the heart rules work

Normal Minecraft gives every player 10 hearts (20 health points). Lifesteal plugins change your maximum health, not just your current health, so the change survives respawning.

  1. You start at the default. Usually 10 hearts, the same as vanilla.
  2. You kill a player. Their max health drops by one heart and yours rises by one. Your health bar literally gets longer.
  3. You hit the cap. Servers set a maximum, commonly 20 hearts. Past the cap, kills stop growing your bar; on many servers the extra heart drops as an item instead.
  4. You die. You lose a heart. On most servers this applies to player kills; some also take a heart for deaths to mobs, lava or falling. Check the rules, because this one catches new players.
  5. You hit zero. You're eliminated. What that means depends on the server (see the table below).
10 → 20The usual range: vanilla's 10 hearts at the start, a server cap around 20

Lifesteal variants: what changes from server to server

No two Lifesteal servers run exactly the same config. These are the switches that matter most, and what to look for in the server's rules or Discord before you join.

RuleCommon optionsWhy it matters
At zero heartsTemporary ban, ban until revived, spectator mode, or reset to a few heartsA permanent ban on a seasonal server can mean sitting out weeks
Natural deathsLose a heart, or only lose hearts to playersDecides whether a creeper can cost you progress
Heart itemsHearts drop on kill, or go straight into your barDropped hearts can be stolen by a third player mid-fight
WithdrawingA command like /withdraw turns a heart into an itemLets you trade or sell hearts, and lets you bank them before risky fights
Crafting heartsA custom recipe, often using expensive blocksGives peaceful players a way back up without PvP
RevivingA craftable revive item or "revive beacon" brings a banned player backFriends can rescue you, so good allies are worth more than good gear
Max heartsOften 20, sometimes higher or lowerA low cap keeps top players catchable
Combat loggingLogging out in a fight counts as a deathNearly universal. Don't quit mid-fight.

How to survive your first day on a Lifesteal server

New players lose hearts in the same few ways. Avoid these and you'll already be ahead of half the server.

  • Leave spawn fast. Players who already have 15+ hearts camp near spawn. Use /rtp (random teleport) if the server has it, or walk far before settling.
  • Gear before fights. Iron armor, a shield and a stack of food first. A fight in leather armor is a donation.
  • Hide your base. Bury it, don't tower it. A base visible from a distance is an invitation. If the server has land claims, claim right away.
  • Bank hearts when you can. On servers with a withdraw command, turning a spare heart into an item and storing it gives you a safety net.
  • Find a team. Allies can revive you and watch your back. Many servers have team or clan commands.
  • Learn the combat rules. Know how long the combat tag lasts before you log out.
  • Fighting at low hearts to "win it back." Losing again pushes you closer to the ban screen.
  • Trusting a stranger with your coordinates on day one.
  • Carrying withdrawn hearts into PvP zones. They drop when you die.

Mid-game strategy: hearts are money

Once you have a few spare hearts, the mode turns into an economy. On servers that let you withdraw hearts, they become the most valuable item in the game: players sell them in shops and auction houses, bounty hunters target players with lots of hearts, and teams pool hearts to revive members.

  • Know the PvP meta. Most big Lifesteal servers are on Java with modern combat, so end crystals, respawn anchors and totems may matter. Some servers disable crystal PvP; check. If you want to practice first, crystal PvP and practice servers let you learn without losing hearts.
  • Pick fights you can finish. Totems of Undying and golden apples win long fights. Enter a fight with more of both than your opponent.
  • Watch the cap. Once you're at the cap, killing gives no extra hearts to your bar, so being at max makes you a trophy and nothing more. Some top players withdraw down on purpose to sell hearts.

Java has the most choice. Copy the server address from its page and add it in Multiplayer > Add Server. Bedrock players can join Bedrock-native Lifesteal servers or Java servers that run GeyserMC; the Bedrock-friendly ones are listed here:

On Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, the normal game can't add servers by address. See our PS5 guide for the community workarounds.

Is Lifesteal a mod, a plugin or a data pack?

All three exist. Public servers almost always use a server plugin (on Paper or Purpur), so you join with a normal, unmodded client. There are also server-side mods for Fabric and data packs for single-player worlds and small private servers; you'll find them by searching "lifesteal" on Modrinth or CurseForge. Check the supported Minecraft version before you download, since many older projects stopped updating before the 26.x versions.

Lifesteal server setup, in brief

If you're setting one up for friends, the decisions matter more than the plugin you choose: what happens at zero hearts, whether natural deaths cost hearts, whether hearts can be withdrawn and crafted, the max-heart cap, and a combat-log rule. Write those down as your rules before launch. To check someone's max health in vanilla, an operator can run /attribute PlayerName minecraft:max_health base get (a value of 20 is 10 hearts). Our plugin guide covers the rest of a server stack.

Quick questions

Do you lose a heart if a mob kills you?

Depends on the server. Many only take hearts on player kills; others take one for any death. The rules page will say.

What happens when you run out of hearts?

Usually a ban until the season ends or until another player uses a revive item on you. Some servers make you a spectator or give you a few hearts back after a wait.

How many hearts can you have in Lifesteal?

It's a server setting. 20 hearts is a common cap. Vanilla Minecraft technically allows much more max health, so the cap is a design choice.

Is Lifesteal the same as hardcore?

No. Hardcore ends your run on the first death. Lifesteal gives you a buffer of hearts and lets you earn more by winning fights. See our hardcore hub if you want the harsher version.
