A Minecraft SMP is a server where everyone plays survival mode together in one persistent world. SMP stands for "survival multiplayer," so a Minecraft SMP server is simply a server whose main game is survival: you punch trees, dig for diamonds, fight the Ender Dragon and build a base, but with neighbors.
That sounds like any survival server, and it mostly is. What people mean by "SMP" in 2026 is a little more specific, though, and the word carries some baggage from YouTube. This guide explains what an SMP really is, the kinds you'll find, and how to choose one you'll still enjoy in three months.
What does SMP stand for in Minecraft?
SMP stands for Survival Multiplayer. The term is older than most of the servers using it. Early Minecraft had "SSP" (survival single player) and "SMP" (survival multiplayer), and the second one stuck around as a label for servers, then for whole YouTube series.
Health, hunger, mobs and resource gathering. No free blocks from a creative menu.
Everyone shares one world on one server, so your base can be next to someone else's.
The world stays up for weeks or months. That is what separates an SMP from a minigame lobby.
Trading, towns, shops, rivalries and group projects. The people are the content.
You'll also see the word bolted onto other modes. A "Lifesteal SMP" is survival multiplayer where you steal hearts from the players you kill (see what Lifesteal is). A "hardcore SMP" bans you when you die. The SMP part always means the same thing: a shared survival world is the base layer.
SMP vs survival server: is there a difference?
Technically, no. In practice the two labels hint at different vibes.

Public SMPs vs private SMPs
This is the biggest split, and it decides how you get in.
Public SMPs
Anyone can join by typing the server address. They range from a few dozen regulars to huge servers with a player-driven economy. You'll meet strangers, and the rules (and how well they're enforced) do most of the work in keeping it fun. Most public SMPs protect builds with a land-claim plugin, so griefing is limited to what you leave unclaimed.
Private (whitelisted) SMPs
Only players on the whitelist can connect. Everyone else gets "You are not white-listed on this server!" at the door. Private SMPs are usually friend groups, Discord communities that take applications, or content creators recording a series. The famous SMPs (and why they made the word popular)
Most people learned the word "SMP" from YouTube and Twitch, not from a server list. A few private servers turned survival multiplayer into a storytelling format:
- Hermitcraft has run since 2012 as a whitelisted server for a group of long-time creators. It's the classic example of an SMP built around megabases, redstone and friendly pranks. (minecraft.wiki)
- Dream SMP ran from 2020 to 2023 and became famous for roleplay: wars, elections and characters, streamed live. It's the reason many younger players think "SMP" means "a story server."
- Lifesteal SMP started in 2021 and made heart-stealing a whole genre of public server.
You can't join these. They're whitelisted by design, and that's the point: a small, invited cast. What you can do is find a public or application SMP that has the same kind of energy.
What about servers like Donut SMP?
A lot of searches are for "minecraft servers like Donut SMP." Donut SMP is one of the biggest public survival servers right now, known for a player-run economy with an auction house and high-stakes PvP. When people ask for servers like it, they usually want three things: a big, busy world, an economy where trading actually matters, and PvP that has consequences. How to pick an SMP you'll still like in a month
An SMP is a commitment. You'll pour hours into a base, so the server has to still exist when you log in next week. Here's what to check before you settle in:
- Real player count, over time. A server with 30 people every evening beats one showing 900 that looks inflated. Our 7-day chart on each server page shows the pattern, and we flag counts that look unusual. More on that in spotting fake player counts.
- Uptime. If the server drops offline twice a day, your weekend build sessions will suffer. Uptime history is on every listing.
- Map age and reset policy. Ask when the current season started and when the next reset is planned. A reset two weeks after you join is painful.
- Griefing and PvP rules. Is PvP on everywhere, only in the wilderness, or toggleable? Are builds protected with claims, or only by rules and staff?
- Version. The current Java release is 26.3 and the matching Bedrock release is 26.50. Some SMPs stay a version behind so their plugins keep working; the server page lists the supported range.
- What's for sale. Mojang's rules forbid selling perks that give a competitive advantage. If the store sells better swords, that's a warning sign.
- A Discord with no rules channel and no visible staff.
- Staff who ask for your Microsoft account password (nobody legit ever needs it).
- "Season 1" that started last night with promises of a huge launch and no history.
Java or Bedrock SMP?
Both exist. Java SMPs are more common and have the widest plugin choice, and the address format is host or host:port (default port 25565). Bedrock SMPs use port 19132 and are joined from Servers > Add Server on Windows, iOS and Android. Both kinds are on our site, filtered by edition.
Many Java SMPs also let Bedrock players in through GeyserMC. If we've confirmed that, the server page shows a separate Bedrock address. On Xbox, PlayStation and Switch you can't type a custom address in the normal game, so read joining on Xbox for the options.
How to make your own Minecraft SMP
If your friend group wants its own world, you have three realistic routes:
- Realms. Mojang's own hosting. At the time of writing (September 2026), Java Realms is about $7.99/month for you plus 10 friends, and Bedrock Realms is about $3.99/month. No plugins, no mods, and the player cap is fixed. Current prices are on minecraft.net/realms.
- A rented host. You pay a hosting company, get a control panel and install Paper or Purpur. This is the usual route for a whitelisted SMP with a few quality-of-life plugins.
- Your own PC. Free, but the PC must stay on and you'll need to deal with port forwarding. Our guide on making a server public covers it.
For a small private SMP, turn on the whitelist with /whitelist on and add friends with /whitelist add Name. For a public one, plan land claims and backups before anyone joins, not after the first grief.
Quick questions
Is an SMP free to join?
Almost always. Public SMPs are free to join if you own Minecraft; some sell cosmetic ranks. Mojang allows an access fee only if it's the same for everyone.
Is an SMP the same as a Realm?
A Realm can host an SMP, but "SMP" describes the game style, and "Realm" is one specific way to host it. Most public SMPs run on their own servers, not Realms.
Can I join the Dream SMP or Hermitcraft?
No. Both are private, invited-only servers. Look for an application-based SMP instead if you want a small cast and a story.
