- Events work because they put your players online at the same time. Ten players at 7pm feels like a server; ten players spread over a day feels empty.
- Pick two or three cheap events, run them on the same days every week, and only then add big seasonal ones.
- Prizes given away free are not limited by the EULA, but keep them in-game and never sell entry. Vote parties are the easiest event you can run: link votes to a reward with NuVotifier.
The best Minecraft server events cost almost nothing to set up, happen at a fixed time every week, and end with something a player keeps (an item, a title, a spot on a leaderboard). A spectacle that took your build team a month does less for retention than a drop party every Friday at 7pm that people can plan around.
Below are more than thirty events grouped by mode, each with its setup effort, the plugins involved and what it does for you, then seasonal events, a weekly rhythm, prizes that stay inside Mojang's rules, and how to announce so people show up.
What an event has to do for you
On our list the median online server has 12 players and 36% have five or fewer. For most small servers the problem is not that nobody plays; it is that the people who play are never online together. An event concentrates them in time, and that has effects you can measure.
- Busy hours count. Our Server Score gives 12 of its 100 points to busy hours (how high and how steady your peaks are). A weekly event that pulls 25 people at once moves that more than 25 people spread across a week.
- New players see a live server. Someone who arrives from your listing during an event joins a full chat and a crowd at spawn; someone who arrives at 3am to an empty world leaves. Put event times in your description.
- People have something to talk about. Screenshots of the boss fight and the build contest winners are the Discord posts and short clips that bring the next players in.
Survival and SMP event ideas
Survival players want a shared goal and a reason to gather. These need almost no plugins beyond what you already run.
| Event | Effort | Plugins | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drop party at spawn | 10 minutes | None | Gets everyone in one place at one time. Good launch-day and Friday-night opener. |
| Race to the first diamond (or first netherite) | 10 minutes | None; a fresh area or a temporary world with Multiverse | Short, loud and fair for new players. |
| Community build (a road, a town hall, a market) | An hour to plan | Your claims plugin | Gives regulars a shared project over several weeks. |
| Boss night | An hour | Vanilla Wither or Warden; custom bosses with MythicMobs | Teamwork plus screenshots. The free version of MythicMobs is enough. |
| Scavenger hunt | An hour | Signs, or holograms with DecentHolograms | Shows new players the map. Hide clues near warps you want them to learn. |
| Trade fair | 30 minutes | Player shops or chest shops | Kickstarts an economy that has gone quiet. |
| Manhunt or death-swap night | 30 minutes | None; one volunteer runner | Works with as few as four people. |
| Hardcore weekend | An hour | Multiverse for a throwaway world | A fresh-start feeling without resetting the main world. |
PvP and minigame event ideas
PvP events need a fair arena and a clear bracket more than they need plugins. Post the bracket in Discord before you start and it runs itself.
| Event | Effort | Plugins | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1v1 bracket tournament | 30 minutes | Kits from EssentialsX; a duels plugin if you run one | The classic. Sixteen players fill an evening. |
| Kit rumble (everyone, same kit, last one standing) | 10 minutes | EssentialsX kits | No bracket to manage, so it works for a surprise event. |
| King of the hill | 20 minutes | None; a marked spot and a timer | Continuous action; people drop in late and still play. |
| Spleef | 20 minutes to build | WorldEdit to reset the floor | Fun at any skill level, so mixed groups stay together. |
| Parkour time trial | An hour to build | A parkour plugin or manual timing | Runs all week; post the top times on Sunday. |
| Hide and seek in spawn | 10 minutes | None | Doubles as a spawn tour for new players. |
| Sumo or boxing night | 10 minutes | None | Quick rounds, so 30 players get turns. |
| Bedwars or skywars evening (networks) | None | Your existing minigame | Filling one mode at a set hour beats six modes with two players each. |
If you run an under-served PvP mode, a weekly tournament is a cheap way to become the server people remember: on our list Crystal PvP has only 29 servers at a typical 155 players, and KitPvP 44 at a typical 44.
Skyblock, prison, economy and creative
These modes already have a progression loop, so the best events bend that loop for a short time rather than replacing it.
- Island or plot showcase. Players submit a warp; staff and players vote in Discord. Effort: an hour on judging night. Plugins: none.
- Double-drops or double-XP hour. Announce it an hour before. Most economy and mining plugins have a multiplier; if yours does not, a temporary LuckPerms rank with a boosted permission works.
- Balance sprint. Most money earned between two timestamps wins; post the start and end baltop so nobody argues.
- Auction night. One rare item, a live chat auction, in-game currency only. It drains money from the top players, which every economy needs.
- Mine rush (prison). A single mine, everyone at once, prizes for most blocks in ten minutes.
- Build battle with a theme. Twenty minutes, one theme, votes at the end. A plot plugin makes judging easy; a row of fenced squares works too.
- Redstone or pixel-art contest. Runs over a week, judged on the weekend. Attracts the quiet builders who never enter PvP.
- Collaborative megabuild. One structure, everyone welcome, a screenshot each Sunday. Creative servers grow on the timelapse this produces.
Halloween, winter and other seasonal events
Seasonal events deserve more effort because players expect them. Plan them a month out and reuse the builds every year.
A build near spawn with a chest at the end. Add a zombie siege at midnight server time with a custom mob or a mob spawner in a locked arena.
Hide 20 carved pumpkins around spawn and the nearest towns. First to find them all posts a screenshot. Cheap, and it teaches the map.
A walled arena, unlimited snowballs, knockback only. Runs as a background event for the whole month.
One chest per day in December with a small item inside. A crates plugin can do this with a daily key; see the crates plugin guide.
A drop party, a screenshot wall and a free cosmetic for everyone online. Put the date in your listing a week ahead.
The biggest event you will run. It has its own guide: planning a new season.
A weekly event rhythm a small team can keep
Consistency beats ambition. Players remember "Friday is tournament night"; they do not remember a one-off you ran in March. Here is a rhythm one owner and two helpers can hold for months.
- Pick two fixed slots. One weeknight, one weekend afternoon, in the time zone most of your players share. Your listing's 7-day chart shows when they are already online; put events just before that peak, not after.
- Assign one recurring event to each slot. Something you can run in ten minutes of setup, such as a kit rumble and a build battle. Change the theme, not the format.
- Add one background event that runs all week (a parkour trial, a screenshot contest, a scavenger hunt) so people have something to do when online alone.
- Keep one seasonal event a quarter. That is the one you build for.
- Post results within a day. Winner names in Discord, a screenshot, and the next date. The post matters as much as the event.
If you miss a slot, say so and name the next one; skipping silently trains players to stop checking.
Rewards, announcements and vote parties
Prizes that stay inside the EULA
Mojang's rules limit what you can sell, not what you can give away, so a free prize such as a diamond kit, claim blocks, in-game currency or a rare item is fine. Never charge real money to enter, and do not give away things that leave the game (cash, gift cards) without reading our giveaway guide first. The full rules are in our EULA guide.
Announcing so people show up
- Discord. Discord's built-in Events feature sends reminders for you. Ping a self-assigned events role, never everyone.
- The MOTD. Line two is for "why join now":
Tournament Friday 7pm EST. Change it back the day after. Our MOTD guide covers the syntax. - Your listing. Put the weekly schedule in your description. If an event marks a reset, fill in the Seasons fields on your edit page: the listing shows "New season in 3 days" before the date and "Fresh season" for two weeks after, and you appear on the fresh seasons list.
- In game. A broadcast an hour before and ten minutes before. More than that is noise.
Vote parties: the event you can run every day
A vote party needs no setup. Players vote for your server on lists like ours, a counter fills, and at the target everyone online gets a reward at once. VotingPlugin has it built in: set VoteParty.VotesRequired in SpecialRewards.yml and the rewards under it, as described in the plugin's wiki. Votes have to reach your server first, which means NuVotifier and a vote port. Set the target so the party fires about once a day at your current vote rate; a target that takes a week is a chore, not an event. Our vote party and crates guide goes deeper.
Votes also decide your monthly rank here, and the count resets on the 1st, so a party in the first week of a month does double work. If votes are not connected yet, claim your listing from its server page, paste your NuVotifier token and send yourself a test vote before you announce the first party.
Quick questions
How often should a small Minecraft server run events?
Two fixed slots a week plus one background event, and a seasonal event once a quarter. Showing up on the same day every week matters more than frequency.
What are good Minecraft server event ideas with only five players?
Manhunt, a race to the first diamond, a drop party, sumo rounds and a screenshot contest all work with four or five people. Skip brackets and team modes until you have more than eight online at once.
Do events help my ranking on server lists?
Indirectly. Events raise your peak count and your busy-hours consistency, which together are 50 of our Server Score's 100 points. A vote party raises votes directly, another 15 points.
