Minecraft server advertising on Discord: how ad servers, bump bots and the rules really work

Advertising in other people's Discords brings small bursts of curious players, not a flood. It works when you post the right format in the right channels on their cooldown, never DM anyone, and measure which servers actually send joins.

For server ownersUpdated 8 min read

Quick answer
  • Post in channels built for ads, in that channel's format, on its cooldown. Nowhere else.
  • Never DM ads. Discord's Community Guidelines ban unsolicited bulk messages, and servers that encourage DM ads count as spam servers.
  • Give Discord traffic its own address (discord.play.yourserver.net) so you can count joins per ad server.
  • Expect a handful of joins per post, mostly in the first hour. Keep the servers that send players and drop the rest.

Minecraft server advertising on Discord means posting your server in other people's communities: dedicated advertising Discords, the server-ads channel of a bigger Minecraft community, and Discord directories where you list your own Discord. Done properly it is free and takes about 20 minutes a day. It brings small bursts of players who were already looking for a server, and it stops working the moment you break a channel's rules or send one unsolicited DM.

This guide covers other people's Discords only. Building your own (channels, roles, DiscordSRV, invites) is in our Minecraft server Discord guide, and the wider channel comparison is in how to advertise a Minecraft server. Here we go deep on ad servers, bump bots, the rules, the post format that gets clicks, and how to tell which Discords are worth your time.

The three kinds of Discord you can advertise in

People lump these together, but they behave differently and reward different posts.

KindWhat it isTypical ruleWho reads itWhat to expect
Advertising DiscordsWhole servers that exist for ads, often with one channel per game mode or editionOne ad per channel per cooldown (30 minutes to 24 hours), a length cap, sometimes a required templateMostly other owners, plus players who browse them when boredA few joins per post; the fastest to post in and the fastest to be ignored
Community Discords with a #server-ads channelA real community (a YouTuber's fans, a plugin project, a modpack) that tolerates ads in one channelStricter: one post per week is common, no pings, no repeated postsActual players, and they match the community's interestFewer posts allowed, better joins per post
Discord directoriesSites that list Discord servers by tag and let you bump your listing with a bot commandOne bump per fixed interval (two hours on the biggest one)People looking for a Discord to join, not a game serverMembers for your Discord first, players second

How bump bots and bump channels actually work

"Bump" means two different things, and mixing them up gets people banned.

  • Bumping in an ad server. Most advertising Discords let you post an ad, then re-post it once the cooldown expires. Some run their own bot: you register the ad once and run a bump command to re-post it. The bot is a rule enforcer, not a growth tool.
  • Bumping a directory listing. On the large Discord directories, a bot in your own Discord accepts a /bump command that pushes your listing back to the top of its tag pages for a while. The biggest directory allows one bump every two hours, and anyone with access to the channel can run it. Reminder bots that tell you when the two hours are up are fine because they run as a bot, not as you.
  • "Auto-bumpers" and self-bots. Scripts that log in as your user account and run commands on a timer break Discord's rules on automating user accounts, and they are a common reason an owner's account gets flagged. Do not run them.

Discord's rules, in plain terms

The Community Guidelines say: "Do not send unsolicited bulk messages (or spam) to others," and: "Do not engage with our service in an inauthentic way. This includes artificially inflating server membership, manipulating engagement metrics, and selling artificial engagement services." Discord's anti-spam page spells out the cases that catch server owners:

  • DM advertising is spam. "Receiving unsolicited messages or ads is a bad experience for users," and "servers dedicated to mass copy-paste messaging, or encouraging DM advertising, are considered dedicated spam servers."
  • Join 4 Join is risky even when both sides agree. "Even if these invitations are not unsolicited, they might be flagged by our spam filter."
  • Invite reward servers are discouraged. Perks for dragging friends in "often result in spamming users with unsolicited messages," and Discord "may take action including removing the users and server."
  • Bought members and fake engagement fall under platform manipulation, alongside "join-for-join," "invite rewards" and "purchasing fake members."

The post format that gets clicks

Ad channels scroll fast. Readers see the first line, the image and the address, and decide in a second. Every ad that works has four parts:

  1. One line that says what it is and what is different. Mode, edition and the one thing you do that most servers do not. "Semi-vanilla SMP, Java and Bedrock, weekly build contests with in-game prizes" beats three lines of adjectives.
  2. The address, on its own line. Players copy it from here. Add the Bedrock port if you run Geyser.
  3. One image. Your banner, or better, one real screenshot with players in it. Two images get cropped into a grid; a video attachment is ignored on mobile.
  4. Your Discord invite. A never-expiring invite pointed at your welcome channel. Skip "join for a free rank" unless the channel's rules allow incentives; most do not.

Here is an ad you can copy. It fits under most length caps and needs no formatting the channel might strip:

Hollowpine SMP | Java 26.3 + Bedrock | NA East
Semi-vanilla survival with land claims, player shops and a weekly build contest. No pay-to-win ranks.
New season started Sept 20, fresh map.
IP: discord.play.hollowpine.net (Bedrock port 19132)
Discord: discord.gg/yourinvite

Notice the date. Ads with a "why now" (a new season, an event this weekend) get more clicks than evergreen ones, so update that line weekly. The pitch should match your listing description and your MOTD, so a player who checks you out sees the same server everywhere.

How often to repost, and where to keep track

Every channel has a cooldown, and moderators check. Posting early gets the ad deleted, then gets you banned. Keep a sheet with one row per Discord: channel, cooldown, format rules, last posted, joins sent. After a month it tells you which five servers matter.

Channel typeCadence that worksWhy
Ad Discords with a 30 minute to 2 hour cooldownTwo or three times a day at peak hours, not every cooldownPosting every 30 minutes trains everyone to scroll past your banner
Ad Discords with a 12 or 24 hour cooldownOnce a day, same time, when your players are onlineJoins land when someone is home to greet them
Community #server-ads channelsExactly the allowed interval, usually weeklyThese send the best players; a ban here costs the most
Directory bumpsFour to six well-spaced bumps a dayRecency sorting; more than that is diminishing returns

Reply to every comment under yesterday's posts. A question under an ad ("does it work on phone?") is a player about to join; answer within the hour.

How to measure which Discords send joins

Minecraft does not tell you where a player came from, so build the measurement in before you post anything.

  1. Give Discord ads their own hostname. Add a DNS record such as discord.play.yourserver.net pointing at the same server (a CNAME to your main hostname, or an SRV record if you use one). Only the address in the ad differs. Use one hostname per ad server if you want to rank them.
  2. Count logins per hostname. On Paper and Spigot, PlayerLoginEvent.getHostname() returns the address the player typed. A tiny plugin or Skript that increments a counter per hostname gives you joins per channel.
  3. Use a code word where you cannot change the address. "Type /redeem ADS at spawn for a cosmetic" in the ad, then read the redemption log.
  4. Watch the 7-day chart. Your server's stats page on our list shows players online across the last seven days. Post at a fixed time each day and the spikes line up with your posts.
  5. Track retention, not just joins. Ten joins who leave in five minutes are worth less than three who stay. Compare "seen again after 24 hours" per hostname before deciding which servers to keep.

Honest expectations

A single ad in a busy advertising Discord typically brings a handful of joins, most within the first hour, after which the post is buried. Community #server-ads channels bring fewer but better ones. Directory bumps grow your Discord's member count more than your player count. Promotion multiplies whatever your first five minutes do, which is why how to get players on your Minecraft server starts with the ten-minute test rather than with ads.

43 vs 9Median players online for servers on our list with a Discord link against those without (about 2,500 online servers). A correlation, but the link is free and worth half a point on the listing strength meter.

Two things worth doing alongside the ad servers: put your Discord invite on your listing so the member and online counts show on your page, and post once in our own community Discord's server-showcase forum, where the bot attaches a live status card with your real player count. Then keep the sheet honest. In a month, the five Discords that sent players are your channel.

Next step on this site: list your server free if it is not here yet, add your Discord invite in the listing editor, and claim the server from its page so the strength meter starts counting for you.

Quick questions

Is advertising a Minecraft server in Discord DMs against the rules?

Yes. Discord's Community Guidelines ban unsolicited bulk messages, its anti-spam page lists "unsolicited messages and advertisements" as DM spam, and servers that encourage DM advertising are treated as spam servers.

Do bump bots grow a Minecraft server?

Directory bumps make your Discord visible for a couple of hours at a time, and ad-server bump commands re-post your ad on the cooldown. They keep you visible; the ad's first line and your first five minutes make people join.

How many players will a Discord ad bring?

For a small server, a few per post in a busy ad server, and a few per week from a community channel. Track joins per hostname for a month before judging any single Discord.

Can I pay an advertising Discord to pin or feature my ad?

Some sell pinned slots. Treat it like any paid placement: ask where it shows and for how long, and measure it with its own hostname. Our guide to advertising services covers testing a paid channel with a budget cap.
