There are pirate-themed servers, and then there is PirateCraft, where the theme is a physics problem. You build a galleon out of ordinary blocks, put a helm on it, and the whole thing sails. Cannons on the deck fire real shots. If you leave it moored while you're offline, another crew can steal it. That is the game, and it has been the game since 2012.
Ships you build, ships you lose
The server's own pitch is short: "sail your own custom built ships" and "fire a range of working cannons." In practice the ship is whatever you can construct within the rules of the vessel types, from a sloop to something that needs a crew to run. Ship-to-ship combat is cannon fire and boarding. The bit that makes people either love or leave the server is the line buried in the feature list: ship theft is possible when the owner is offline. Your ship is as safe as your hiding spot.
Build or join a crew of pirates with private chat, alliances, and stats tracked per crew. Most of the server's stories are crew rivalries.
Build protection comes from a golden shovel, no commands needed. Anything left unprotected can be raided under the siege rules.
More than 200 custom brewing recipes, with barrel-aging. Drinks have effects, and taverns are where deals get made.
Around all that is a survival economy that the server says is "fully player driven," with a giant pirate marketplace where you buy, sell and run shops. Ranks aren't bought; an automatic system promotes you based on what you've actually done. Gates, drawbridges and portcullis doors work, so a proper fort is possible, which matters when the siege rules are in play.
Who runs it
PirateCraft has been operated by the same admin, GodsDead, and a small volunteer crew for over a decade; the site's copyright line reads 2012 to 2026. It has stayed a single-world survival server rather than growing into a network, and it runs on Minecraft 1.18.2 with premium Java accounts only. That stability is why old builds, old crews and old grudges are still around.

Your first hour
Spawn, read the ship rules on the site, and don't build a ship yet. Claim a plot of coast with the golden shovel, get a chest and some food, and join a crew or make friends with one. Your first vessel should be small and cheap, because it will probably be sunk or stolen while you learn. Everyone's first one is.
Why it stands out
Minecraft has hundreds of survival servers with custom items. Very few make the world itself do something new. On PirateCraft the sea is a place you travel, fight on and hide in, and the boats you build are the reason. If you liked Sea of Thieves and wish it were made of blocks, this is the closest thing that exists, and it has been running quietly for fourteen years.

Quick answers
What version is PirateCraft on?
Minecraft Java 1.18.2, premium accounts only. Check the MOTD before you connect, as the server updates when its ship plugins allow.
How do I get a ship?
Build one to the vessel rules on the site, place the helm, and pilot it with the ship commands. Small sloops are cheap; bigger ships need a crew to sail and defend.
Can my ship be stolen?
Yes, while you're offline and it isn't secured. Moor it inside a claimed, walled dock. Losing a first ship is part of learning.
Is PirateCraft pay-to-win?
Ranks are earned by an automatic system based on what you've done. The store sells cosmetics and perks rather than cannons.
