- Skyblock: a tiny island in the void, one tree, a chest. You expand by farming and building a cobblestone generator.
- OneBlock: one magic block that respawns as a new block (or chest or mob) every time you mine it, moving through themed phases.
- Servers add private islands, an economy, island upgrades and rankings, so you're competing with everyone else's island.
Minecraft Skyblock servers put every player on their own small island floating over the void, with a tree, a chest and not much else. You grow that island into a base by farming, building a cobblestone generator and trading with other players. OneBlock is the newer cousin: instead of an island, you stand on a single block that turns into a new block every time you break it.
Both modes are single-player maps at heart, but servers turn them into something bigger: private islands, co-op teams, shops, an economy and a leaderboard of the richest islands. This guide compares the two, walks you through the first hour, and explains the server systems you'll run into.
Skyblock vs OneBlock at a glance
| Skyblock | OneBlock | |
|---|---|---|
| You start with | A small island, a tree, a chest with basics | One block (often grass or dirt) and nothing else |
| Where resources come from | Your tree, your farm and a cobblestone generator | The magic block, which cycles through blocks, chests and mobs |
| Progress feels like | Engineering: planning farms and generators | Discovery: "what will the next block be?" |
| Structure | Open-ended, driven by island level and upgrades | Phases (plains, ocean, Nether, End and so on) |
| History | Original map by Noobcrew, released 2011 | Original map by IJAMinecraft, released January 2020 |
| Best for | Planners, farmers, economy players | Players who like surprises and short sessions |
A small bit of trivia: the original Skyblock creator tried to trademark the name, and in May 2026 the US Trademark Trial and Appeal Board refused it as merely descriptive (per minecraft.wiki). So "Skyblock" stays a genre name anyone can use.
How Skyblock progress works on a server
Single-player Skyblock is a challenge list. Server Skyblock adds layers on top. Most servers use the same core pieces, though names differ.
Created with a command like /is or /island. It's protected, so only you and people you invite can build.
A score based on the blocks you've placed. Valuable blocks count for more. It drives the leaderboard.
Spend money to widen your island border, add team slots or boost your generator's ore chances.
Sell crops and ores to a server shop, trade with players, run a shop of your own.
Goals like "craft 64 bread" that pay rewards and unlock later tiers.
Invite friends to your island and share everything, including the blame.
The cobblestone generator is everything
You can't mine a mountain when you live on a rock in the sky, so you make stone. Per minecraft.wiki: when water meets flowing lava, the lava becomes cobblestone. If lava flows down onto water from above, you get stone instead. And if water touches a lava source block, it turns to obsidian, which is how many new players accidentally lose their only lava bucket.
Many servers upgrade the generator so it sometimes produces coal, iron, diamonds or other ores instead of cobblestone. That's usually the main reason to buy island upgrades.
Your first hour on a Skyblock server
- Create your island and read the starter chest. Don't break anything yet. Look at what you have: usually lava, ice or water, seeds and a few basics.
- Chop the tree carefully. Don't fall off. Collect every sapling and replant right away. Your tree is your only wood source.
- Build the cobblestone generator. Water first, then lava, with a gap. Test it once and stop worrying.
- Expand the island with cobble. Make room for a tree farm and a wheat farm. Light it up so mobs don't spawn and knock you off.
- Start a sellable farm. Check
/shopor/sellprices to see what pays best early, often sugar cane, cactus or melons. - Do the first challenges. They're the fastest early money on most servers.
- Set a home.
/is homeor/is gowill save you after the first fall into the void.
OneBlock: how the magic block works
In OneBlock, you stand on one block in the void. Break it and it instantly becomes another block. Keep breaking it and it moves through phases, each with its own set of blocks, chests and mobs. For example, the AOneBlock plugin (an addon for the BentoBox island framework, based on IJAMinecraft's concept) has 18 phases, from plains to the End, after which the phases repeat.
- Place blocks as you get them. The whole trick is building a platform out of the blocks the magic block gives you. Stand on something bigger than one block quickly.
- Protect yourself from mobs. Hostile mobs spawn from the block and can knock you into the void. A small wall helps.
- Save the rare blocks. Early lava, water and saplings are precious. Don't use your only sapling as decoration.
- Learn the command. On AOneBlock servers it's
/ob; other plugins use/isor/oneblock./helpwill tell you.

Servers like Hypixel SkyBlock: what people mean
Hypixel SkyBlock launched in June 2019 and is much bigger than a normal Skyblock: an RPG with skills, a large shared hub world, collections and minions, NPC workers that sit on your island and gather resources while you're away. It's so different from classic Skyblock that "servers like Hypixel SkyBlock" really means "RPG Skyblock," with automation and a big economy rather than the old island challenge.
When you check a server for that style, look at the server's store and features page for words like minions, collectors, skills or custom items. And look closely at what the store sells. Selling minions or upgrades that produce more than free players can earn is a gameplay advantage, and Mojang's usage guidelines don't allow that. Our non-pay-to-win guide shows you what to check.

Java has the widest choice of Skyblock and OneBlock servers. Bedrock players on Windows, iOS and Android can add a server from Servers > Add Server (port 19132 by default) or join Java servers that accept Bedrock through GeyserMC. Filter for those on our crossplay page. On Xbox, PlayStation and Switch you can't add servers by address, so the simplest route is to open the featured servers built into the Servers tab and check each one's game menu; their mode lineups change over time. See joining on Xbox for the other options.
Skyblock servers with an economy: what to check
An economy is what keeps a Skyblock server alive after the first week. Before you commit, check these:
- Season length. Many Skyblock servers reset every few months with a new leaderboard. Joining two weeks before a reset isn't ideal. Our fresh-season page lists recent restarts.
- Real activity. A player shop only works if there are buyers. Look at the 7-day player chart on the server page.
- Island top prizes. Some servers advertise prizes for the top islands. Read how they work, and keep in mind that Mojang's rules say server currency can't have real-world value or be cashed out.
- Version. The current Java release is 26.3; the server page shows which versions each server accepts.
Quick questions
Is Skyblock or OneBlock better for beginners?
OneBlock, usually. It feeds you new blocks steadily, so you're never stuck. Skyblock asks you to plan, and one mistake with your lava bucket can set you back.
Can I play Skyblock with friends?
Yes. Most servers let you invite friends to your island with a command like /is invite Name so you share it.
What happens if I fall into the void?
You die and usually lose what you carried. Most servers respawn you on your island. Build railings early.
How do I set up my own OneBlock server?
A common route is Paper plus the BentoBox framework with its AOneBlock addon: install BentoBox, start the server once to create its folders, then drop AOneBlock into the addons folder. Our plugin guide covers the rest.
