- Design for the exit: a new player should see the way out from the spawn point and be in the game in twenty seconds.
- Free spawn schematics exist on Planet Minecraft and similar sites, each under the builder's own terms; read the terms line, credit the builder, and paste with WorldEdit's
//schem loadand//paste -a. - Vanilla
spawn-protection(default 16) only stops non-ops near the world spawn; use a WorldGuard region for a real spawn. - Three spawn photos on your listing are worth 1.5 points on our strength meter, and the banner another 0.5.
Spawn is the first thing every player sees and the last thing most owners design for them. The temptation is a showpiece: a castle, a floating island, a hub with twelve portals. What a new player needs is the opposite: a small space where the way forward is visible from where they appear, one sign at each choice, and nothing to get lost in. Retention starts at spawn, and a spawn that takes five minutes to escape has already lost the five minutes that mattered.
This guide covers the design rules that hold across modes, spawn ideas for survival, skyblock, prison, networks and minigame lobbies, where to get free schematics and what their terms allow, how to paste them, the two kinds of spawn protection, and how to put spawn photos on your listing so they count.
What a spawn is for
A spawn has three jobs, in this order: orient, direct, and only then impress. A returning player needs warps, shops and a place to meet. A new player needs to know which way the game is. Both are served by the same layout if you build it around a path.
| Design rule | What it means in blocks | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Small | A survival spawn fits in about 50 by 50; a minigame lobby can be smaller | Bigger takes longer to cross and to protect, and empties faster |
| One path | Spawn point at one end, the exit (portal, /rtp sign, gate) at the other, in a straight line | No decisions until the player has seen everything that matters |
| Sightlines | Nothing taller than two blocks between the spawn point and the exit | Players walk toward what they can see |
| Ground level | No stairs, elevators or water at the start of the path | Bedrock players on phones struggle with vertical navigation |
| Lit and safe | Light level everywhere, no mobs, no fall damage, no PvP | The first death should be in the game, not at spawn |
| Signs at decisions only | Where the path splits: one sign per branch. Where it does not: none | Sign walls are skipped; single signs are read |
Warps and NPCs go beside the path, not on it: a shop row, a crate area, a leaderboard wall, a Citizens NPC for the tutorial (see the first-join guide for what that NPC should do). Holograms over the important things ("Start here", "Shops") are the cheapest signage there is.
Spawn ideas by mode
A small walled village with the spawn point at the gate. Shops in the houses, the world portal or /rtp sign at the far gate. Players understand a village without signs.
Almost no build: a campfire, a community chest, a map wall showing towns, a path into the world. It says "this is a small community" the moment you arrive.
One island with the island NPC or /is sign in the middle, shops around the edge, the drop into the void fenced. Keep the sky clear so the view sells the mode.
The spawn is the first cell block: mine on one side, sell sign on the other, rankup NPC at the end. The loop is visible in one look.
A round plaza with a portal or NPC per mode, each showing its live player count. Put the busiest mode facing the spawn point and fold modes with no players out of sight.
Queue NPCs in a line facing the spawn point, a parkour around the outside for waiting, nothing else. Lobbies are for waiting, not exploring.
A plot claim sign and a gallery of the best plots, so the standard is visible before the first block.
The same layout re-dressed for Halloween or winter. Players notice; you keep the sightlines.
For a network, the hub is a server of its own behind Velocity or BungeeCord (Velocity is the most common proxy on our list, on 983 servers), and it should be the smallest server you run: no world beyond the plaza, a fallback for when a mode goes down, and a rule that a mode with two players does not get a portal at the front. The Velocity setup guide covers the proxy side. If you are choosing between one mode and a network, our data favors one mode until you have the players to fill several; see the network list for what a full hub looks like.
Free spawn schematics and the terms that come with them
You do not have to build spawn yourself. Thousands of spawns, hubs and lobbies are shared free, and a downloaded schematic pasted in an afternoon is often better than a month of your own building. Two things to check before you paste.
- The builder's terms. On Planet Minecraft every upload carries the terms its builder chose, shown on the download page: usually a Creative Commons variant (some allow changes, some forbid commercial use, all require credit) and sometimes all rights reserved with a note about server use. The site's own rules require crediting sources and forbid reuploading other people's work. Read the line, credit the builder in a sign at spawn and in your Discord, and do not sell a spawn you did not build.
- The file format. Modern WorldEdit writes
.schem(the Sponge format) and can still load the older.schematicfiles, but cannot save in the old format. A download that only offers a world folder instead of a schematic is fine too: open it in single player and copy the spawn out with WorldEdit.
Pasting with WorldEdit (or FastAsyncWorldEdit for anything large):
- Put the file in
plugins/WorldEdit/schematics/(on Paper;config/worldedit/schematics/on other platforms). Create the folder if it is not there. - Check it loads:
//schem listshows it, then//schem load nameputs it in your clipboard. - Stand where you want it and paste:
//paste -askips the air in the clipboard so the build does not carve a box out of the terrain. Big spawns can lag a small server for a few seconds. - Wrong spot?
//undo, move, paste again. Then set the spawn point at the start of the path with/setworldspawn(vanilla) or your spawn plugin's command. - Walk it as a new player. Downloaded spawns are built to look good in screenshots, not to exit quickly. Cut walls, add the one sign, open the sightline to the gate.
Spawn protection settings
There are two different things called spawn protection, and most owners only know the weaker one.
The vanilla setting
spawn-protection in server.properties (default 16) protects a square around the world spawn point; the wiki gives the side length as 2x+1, so the default is a 33-block square. Only ops can build inside it, and if the server has no ops at all the protection is turned off automatically. Set it to 0 to disable it (the server.properties reference has the details). It does not stop mobs, PvP, fire, explosions or anything outside the square, and it is centered on the world spawn, not on your build.
A region
For a real spawn use a region plugin. WorldGuard lets you select the spawn with WorldEdit, define a region, and set flags such as build deny, pvp deny, mob spawning deny, fire spread deny and a greeting message. Set spawn-protection to 0 once the region exists so the two do not fight, and give staff a build permission in the region rather than op. If your server already runs a claims plugin, most can protect an admin claim at spawn too; our GriefPrevention guide shows the admin claim route.
Putting spawn photos on the listing
A spawn is also your best marketing asset, because it is the one place on the server that always looks finished. On our listing strength meter, three photos are worth 0.5 each and the banner another 0.5, which together are a sixth of the 12-point scale that decides whether a claimed listing qualifies for a Rising spot on page one (strength 8 or more, while the server is growing). The median listing strength on our list is 3.5, so photos alone move you past most servers.
- Shoot at golden hour in game (around tick 12000) from a player's eye height, with the path and the exit visible. Shaders are fine; a render that shows a spawn players will not recognize is not.
- Get players in the frame. Ask regulars to stand at spawn for one screenshot. An empty spawn, however pretty, reads as an empty server.
- Three angles: the arrival view (what a new player sees), one landmark, and one wide shot from above for the banner.
- Crop the banner to the listing's size and keep the icon simple; the banner and icon guide has the dimensions.
- Update the photos each season. A photo of a spawn you replaced a year ago is the first thing a returning player notices.
Then check the rest of the meter on your edit page: description, summary, modes, Discord, video. List the server if it is not on here yet, or claim it from its server page, and upload the three photos the day spawn is finished.
Quick questions
How big should a Minecraft server spawn be?
Small enough to cross in about twenty seconds: roughly 50 by 50 blocks for a survival spawn, smaller for a minigame lobby. The exit should be visible from the spawn point.
Where can I download free Minecraft server spawns?
Planet Minecraft and similar community sites list spawns, hubs and lobbies as schematics or world downloads, each under the builder's chosen terms. Read the terms on the download page, credit the builder, and open the file in a test world before pasting it on a live server.
How do I disable spawn protection?
Set spawn-protection=0 in server.properties and restart. It is also off automatically when the server has no ops. Replace it with a WorldGuard region if you still want spawn protected.
Do spawn photos help my server rank?
They add up to 1.5 points on our 12-point listing strength meter, plus 0.5 for a banner. Strength is 12 of the 100 Server Score points and the gate for Rising spots, so they help directly and by unlocking the spot.
