Planning a new season for your Minecraft server

A reset works when players know the date weeks ahead, keep what they paid for, and find a reason to come back that the old map could not give them. Here is the plan, folder by folder.

For server ownersUpdated 8 min read

Quick answer
  • Wipe the world folders and per-player progress; keep ranks, purchases, cosmetics and titles. Never wipe something a player paid for.
  • Announce the date at least three weeks out, list it as coming soon with a launch date so players can tap Notify me, and fill in the Seasons fields on your listing.
  • Launch on your busiest evening with every staff member online and one event in the first hour, then post every day for a week.
  • A new season is worth Fresh points in our ranking for two weeks, at most once every 21 days, so do not reset more often than that.

A new season is the one promotion that reliably brings former players back, because it removes the reason most of them left: the map was finished, the economy was flat, and the top players were untouchable. The reset only works, though, if people know it is coming, if nobody loses something they paid for, and if the first week feels different from the last one.

This is the plan we would follow for a small or mid-sized server: what to wipe and what to keep (down to the folder), season length by mode, a countdown, a launch-day checklist, the week after, and keeping your veterans. If your server is quiet rather than finished, read reviving a dying server first; a reset is one of its options, not the only one.

Should you reset at all?

Reset when the map is the problem: the good land is claimed, the economy has nothing left to buy, new players cannot catch up, or the world is so big it lags. Do not reset because the player count dipped. A dip has other causes (uptime, version, an empty listing), and a wipe on top of it just removes your remaining players' progress.

On our list a new season or launch earns Fresh points for two weeks, and a server can earn them at most once every 21 days, so serial resets do not stack. What a season does do is put a countdown on your listing: fill in the Seasons fields (season name, the date this season started, the date the next one starts) on your edit page and players see "New season in 3 days" before the reset, "Fresh season" for two weeks after, and your server on the fresh seasons list. Those fields are free and most owners leave them blank.

What to wipe and what to carry over

The rule: wipe progress, keep identity and purchases. Progress is the world, the inventory, the balance, the claims. Identity is the rank name, the cosmetics, the title, the Discord role. Here is where each lives on a Paper server with common plugins.

DataWhere it livesWipe or keep
The overworld, Nether and Endworld/, world_nether/, world_the_end/Wipe. On a dedicated server the three dimensions are separate folders, so you can reset the Nether and End without the overworld if that is all you need.
Inventories, positions, ender chestsworld/playerdata/ (one .dat per UUID)Wipe, or players spawn with last season's kit.
Statistics and advancementsworld/stats/, world/advancements/Wipe for a clean start; keep if you run all-time leaderboards.
Balances, homes, warps (EssentialsX)plugins/Essentials/userdata/, one file per playerWipe balances and homes. Set warps again by hand after spawn is built.
Land claimsYour claims plugin's data folderWipe. Claims point at chunks that no longer exist.
Ranks and permissionsLuckPerms storageKeep. Ranks are identity, and paid ranks are a purchase.
Store purchases and cosmeticsTebex or CraftingStore, plus your cosmetics pluginKeep, always. Wiping a purchase is the fastest way to a chargeback and a one-star review.
Votes and vote streaksVotingPlugin dataKeep. Votes reset monthly on lists anyway.

The folder layout is documented on the Minecraft Wiki. Rather than deleting the old folders, change level-name in server.properties to a new name such as season4; the server generates fresh folders and the old map stays on disk for a memorial map or a download. Whatever you do, take a full backup first and test that it restores; the backup guide has the steps.

How long should a season last?

Match the season to how fast your mode is "solved". When the top players have nothing left to do, the season is over whether you reset or not. These are starting points, not rules; your own player chart tells you when a season has gone flat.

ModeTypical seasonWhy
Survival and SMP3 to 6 monthsBuilds take time and players resent losing them fast. Some SMPs never reset and expand the border instead.
Lifesteal, HCF, factions4 to 10 weeksPower concentrates fast and new players cannot enter a late season.
Skyblock and OneBlock2 to 4 monthsIsland progression tops out; a reset with new island content is expected.
Prison2 to 3 monthsRankups and prestige are the game; a reset restarts the race.
Towny, economy, roleplay6 months or longerThe value is in what players built together. Reset rarely, and only with a vote.
Creative and minigamesNo seasonsNothing accumulates that needs clearing. Run events instead.

The countdown: three weeks to launch

  1. Three weeks out: announce the date and what changes. One Discord post with the date, the time zone, what is wiped, what is kept and two or three headline changes. Pin it. Put the date in the MOTD's second line (see the MOTD guide) and in your listing's Seasons fields.
  2. List the season as coming soon. Our coming-soon form takes a launch date, shows the server on the coming soon page, and lets players tap Notify me; we email each of them once when you open. Existing listings get the same countdown from the Seasons fields.
  3. Two weeks out: show, do not tell. A screenshot or ten-second clip every other day: the new spawn, a custom item, the boss arena. Save the clips; they are your launch trailer and your short videos for the month after.
  4. One week out: end-of-season event. A final boss, a "burn the map" TNT party, a screenshot night at everyone's base. It gives the old season a proper ending and gets people online to hear the launch details.
  5. Three days out: test the whole reset on a copy. Fresh folders, kits, warps, spawn protection, the store, ranks. Have a friend join the copy with a new account and play ten minutes.
  6. The day before: freeze. No new plugins, no config changes. Take the final backup of the old season and keep it somewhere other than the server.

Launch-day checklist

  • Open at your busiest hour. Your listing's 7-day chart shows it. A launch at the quiet hour of the day starts empty and stays empty.
  • Whitelist off, MOTD updated, spawn signs pointing somewhere. Players who arrive from a "Notify me" email are new; give them the first-five-minutes treatment from our first-join guide.
  • Every staff member online for the first two hours, playing, not just watching.
  • One event in the first hour (drop party, race to the first diamond). Pick from the event ideas guide.
  • Update the listing's season start date so it flips from "New season in 0 days" to "Fresh season".
  • Post once in each place you are active, with the address, the date and one clip. Not five times.
  • Watch TPS and the console. A burst of 40 new chunks being generated at once is the most load your server will see all season.

The week after

Most servers treat launch as the finish line. It is the start of the only week when former players are paying attention.

  • Fix fast and say so. A broken kit or a missing warp gets fixed within hours, and the fix is announced. Silence reads as abandonment.
  • Post daily. Player builds, the first diamond, the first town. Real screenshots from real players beat anything staff make.
  • Run the weekly event on schedule. The first Friday of a season sets the expectation for every Friday after it.
  • Read the chart. Compare day seven with day one. A launch that drops back to the old baseline within a week tells you the map was not the problem; look at the first five minutes and the version range instead, as in growing a server.
  • Ask your players to vote. Votes reset on the 1st of each month here, so a season that launches in the first week of a month can climb the vote ranking while it is still fresh.

How not to lose your veterans

Veterans are the players who lose the most in a reset, and they are also the ones who bring friends. Give them something the new players cannot have.

  • A veteran tag. A "Season 3" prefix or suffix through LuckPerms costs nothing and lasts forever. Cosmetic, so it is fine under the EULA.
  • A memorial map. Keep the old world online as a read-only warp for a week, or render it with BlueMap or Dynmap and link the render in Discord (see Dynmap vs BlueMap). Offering the old world as a download is the cheapest goodwill you will ever buy.
  • A say in the theme. A Discord poll on the new season's headline feature, two weeks before launch. People show up for what they chose.
  • A job on launch day. Veterans run the drop party, greet new players, lead the first community build. Regulars who feel needed stay.
  • Never touch purchases. Said twice on purpose; it is the one thing that turns a veteran into a one-star review.

Before the countdown starts, make sure the listing can carry it: list the server if it is not on here yet, claim it from its server page, and fill in the Seasons fields with the launch date so the countdown, the Fresh points and the fresh seasons list all work for you.

Quick questions

How do I reset only the Nether and the End?

Stop the server and delete (or rename) world_nether and world_the_end. They regenerate on the next start. This is a common mid-season refresh on survival servers because those dimensions get stripped fastest.

Should I reset player data with the world?

Wipe inventories, positions and balances so everyone starts equal; keep ranks, cosmetics and purchases. Inventories live in world/playerdata, balances and homes in plugins/Essentials/userdata if you use EssentialsX.

How often can a new season help my ranking on this list?

A new season or launch earns Fresh points (4 of the 100 in our Server Score) for two weeks, and a server can earn them at most once every 21 days. Resetting more often than that gives you nothing extra and costs you players.

Do I need a new listing for a new season?

No. Keep the listing and its history, and update the Seasons fields. A separate coming-soon listing is for a server that does not exist yet; an existing server gets the same countdown from its own edit page.
